Done with Genesis!

Done with Genesis!
(35mm photo since my Minolta Hi-Matic 9 was the only camera with film in it that I had with me)

I’ve kept up with The Handwritten Word so far. Today I finished Genesis! I actually finished a day ahead since I was at Starbucks already and I was on a roll. Tomorrow will be a break. :)

I’ve learned a lot so far - it’s really a great way to get all of this stuff in your head - you can’t just blindly read something while your mind wanders when you are writing it down. I recommend it to anyone that wants to get deeper in the word.

Next - Exodus.

Faith - In two things

Quote from Hebrews 11:6 (Message):

It’s impossible to please God apart from faith. And why? Because anyone who wants to approach God must believe both the He exists and that he cares enough to respond to those who seek Him.

Have faith that He exists.

Have faith that he cares enough to respond to those who seeks Him.

In my mind, both are true.

Word.

What is the issue?

The tragedy at Virginia Tech University yesterday got me thinking… What is the issue here?

Gun control?

College campus security?

Violence in the news?

Disturbing plays and how they should have been seen as a sign?

I think I’ve got it.

Hurting world. Hurting people. In some ways it’s just as bad when someone lashes out on another in anger, even when it doesn’t provide news-worthy results. Hurting people are almost as dead while their heart is beating as when it stops. Too. Much. Pain in this world. Isn’t there someone that can help with that?

Fortunately, the answer is yes.

My prayers go out to the families and friends of the victims and to the entire student body, faculty and staff at Virginia Tech.

What is work?

After reading Drew’s post titled “rest well: the importance of sabbath”, I was inspired to explore a little bit of what work really is. See, to have a day of rest means that we need to do something, right?

What does God want us to do? A crowd that was listening to Jesus speak asked Him that very question. His answer? “This is what God wants you to do: Believe in the one He has sent.” This can be found in John 6:28-29. Wow, believing in Jesus is what we must do? That’s pretty profound, especially in this day and age where most of us define ourselves by what we ‘do’ – such as our careers or major hobbies.

Think about it – what’s one of the first questions you ask someone when you first meet them? That’s right, what do you do for a living? What are some typical answers? Network administrator, construction worker, preacher, teacher, nurse, nagelschmiedmeister (that’s a person who makes nails), etc etc etc.

So, if you are a follower of Jesus and you take heed to what He said above, think about how you are going to answer the question of ‘what do you do’ next time you are asked. Instead of saying ‘I’m a gandy dancer (one who tramps gravel between newly laid railroad ties)’ consider saying ‘I believe in Jesus.’

Happy New Year!

It’s now 2006… I can’t believe I made it through 2005 doing all of the stuff that I did. Absolutely incredible.

One thing that I wonder: as it’s the year 2006 Anno Domini, should we as followers of Jesus focus our thoughts more on when Jesus was here or when he’ll come again? Maybe we should focus on the now and our relationship with Him now?

I hope that everyone has a safe and happy new year. Keep those resolutions! (this means you, mr jafp :) )
