New Photo Gear

Happy Birthday to Me!

For those of you who really know me you know that for most of my life I didn’t think I’d make it to 30. Most of the stupid things I’ve done is because of this thought - dropping out of high school is a good example. Well, in less than two weeks I can say that I made it! To celebrate this occasion I decided to go all out and buy myself a new camera and lens.

What did I get?

The camera is a Canon EOS 5D MKII. This is a full frame camera, which means that the sensor is the same size as a 35mm frame, or 36×24mm. This compares to 22×15mm on my old camera (Canon Digital Rebel XTi). This means that there are larger pixels that gather more light, resulting in better images. This camera is a high-ISO monster as well, which will allow me to more easily take high-quality musical gig photos.

The lens is a Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS USM - an excellent zoom telephoto. Now that I have this lens it rounds out a trio of zoom lenses that I have - ultrawide, standard and now this telephoto zoom.

Now for some boring stuff. Here’s the first shot I took with the camera.

1st Shot

Boring I know, this is in my office. Yes I know the cabling needs attention.

Here’s a shot taken outside, I wanted to see the depth of field on the lens, as well as how good the parts of the photo not in focus (bokeh) look:

That’s all. I’m going to do a post on reflections about turning 30 on my birthday, which is on the 25th.

Now the only bad thing is that if I take a bad photo I cannot blame the equipment.

Let me be the first to say congratulations; on both accounts. I know what your cameras and photography mean to you. I have also been with you for several years to know about the whole “turning 30″ thing and I cannot say that no one deserves each day the way you do. I hope this next year is as incredible as the new lens is!

Awesome gear! I am getting something new soon myself, though it won’t be quite as pricey. Enjoy the new gear and life as a 30 year old.

You’re only 30??? You’ve got a long ways to go, man.

I know how you feel about full-frame CMOS and the 70-200 f/2.8 lens. I have the Nikon D700 and the 80-200 f/2.8. I rent the 70-200 f/2.8 when I need the extra at the wide end (some theatre shooting). I’m still working on my holy trio.

Wait till you use a low mm (like a 16mm) on the full frame, you’ll go banana’s. I recommend the 50mm/1.4f its a great and pretty inexpensive lens. I use it all the time. Its well deserved Joe, well deserved.

according to Paul you will own those bananas
