Roanoke
I came to Roanoke for work this week, was supposed to leave yesterday. Turns out I’m staying another week so that gives me this (cold) weekend to kill some time. I’d say it was a full day, from getting up at 5:45am to the incredible nap in the afternoon. What did I do today? Well….
Walked around downtown and saw some old buildings.

I saw right through a man (and strangely I could be seen right through him - look for my reflection to his left).

Basically the day went like this (without photo mojo): woke up at 5:45am to get to Mill Mountain overlook to photograph downtown Roanoke right after dawn - this way you get some light from sun while building lights are still on. After this I went to Mill Mountain Coffee for an Americano and to get warm again (it was like 4 degrees outside). I took a stroll downtown to take some pictures, found that the Taubman Museum wasn’t opening until 10am, so back to Mill Mountain for another cup. I went to the museum when it opened, this place opened last year and was very cool. I was even surprised to see a local photographer’s work exhibited. At 11am I went to the theater to see some folks from the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra put on a children’s program about Aesop’s Fables. The goal was to keep killing time while warm and not sitting in my hotel room. It was actually very enjoyable. I’ve never heard “The Tortoise and the Hare” told where I was entertained so much (it was a guy with a french horn, lady on piano, and another lady narrating). I then browsed some photo books in the resource room and went to lunch. Ernie’s Bar and Grill is where I got that burger, called The Downtowner. It had eggs, pickle, mustard, minced fried onions, and the bun was buttered and toasted on grill. It was very good. Sweet tea there was not too shabby either. After lunch I was killing more time at the museum - there is a neon coffee sign that I have to photograph before I leave town - but I decided I needed a nap so that’ll happen another day. After buying a build it yourself pinhole camera kit (like this) I went back to hotel. I built the camera, halfway, then took a great three hour nap. Went to eat at some little Italian grill, got a coffee then came back to hotel to edit and upload these pictures.
Wow, what a day. Will anyone read all that? Oh, I did all this without my wallet feeling as if I’d been taken to the cleaners.

Tomorrow I’m sleeping in. I might finish the camera (if I don’t tonight), take a roll of photos with it (haven’t decided on if I’ll use a roll of black and white or a roll of 400iso color - I have one of each with me), maybe go back downtown to hit the sign around 4, and perhaps go see that Mall Cop movie.

I read it all, you did a whole lot more than I did, I didn’t even leave the house because unlike you I am not crazy enough to go out in single digit temperatures. I on the other hand spent the whole day trying to keep a fire going with wet wood. Looking forward to what you did today.
WOW! How odd. It sounds just like my day except I for the 5:45am to get to Mill Mountain overlook to photograph downtown Roanoke right after dawn - this way you get some light from sun while building lights are still on. Man, it was like we spent the day together. You mean all you didn’t do is the 5:45am to get to Mill Mountain overlook to photograph downtown Roanoke right after dawn - this way you get some light from sun while building lights are still on. Wow you really know how to not be bored!
