Meet Mr Eleven

This morning at work one of my co-workers called me from 7-11. It was right at 10am (I had just gotten there). He asked if I had been to the 7-11 near work and if I did do I remember seeing a hamster. A hamster? I think I would have remembered that. Someone had left a hamster cage at 7-11 in the grass with the door open, so it could go ‘free’.

I thought about that poor hamster all day.

After work, at 7pm (9 hours later) I went to 7-11 to see if it were still there. It was. Poor, poor hamster. I made a couple calls laughing about the hamster, with no intention of really doing anything about it (apart from going into 7-11 and telling the clerk that they had a hamster outside all day).

I was about to leave. My heart got tugged by this poor hamster. I had to take it home.

Meet Mr Eleven, or you can call him (her) Seven:

Mr Eleven

Seven

I took some shots with my phone and went to Petsmart, where the guy told me it was a Blackbear Hamster. I bought some food for it there. After going home and feeding it and cleaning it’s cage a little he’s lively as ever. He’s a noisy little guy. He’s gnawing on his cage right now. I guess this weekend I will buy one of those things to gnaw on, one of those balls so he can roam around the apartment, and some other general supplies.

I lost my USB card reader for my real camera so these were taken with my phone, then I emailed them to myself from there. He’s hard to take a picture of!

EDIT - I found a picture of the cage from petsmart.com

You are a hero! I probably wouldn’t have left him either. Josh just laughed and drove away….I hope Mr. Eleven bites him if they ever meet. :)

    Haha, aptly named!

When I saw the hamster, i felt bad, but I didn’t really want to interfere with what someone was doing…. or maybe it belonged to someone that was coming right back out. It’s awesome that he stuck it out and hunkered down until someone was nice enough to finally get him. haha

I laughed for like an hour strait after you called and said it was still there!!

aw, joe the humanitarian. that is so nice of you. i have a hamster once named evi (short for evil). she somehow got loose one day and climbed inside my apartment wall where we heard her scratching around for a couple of days. ultimately, she perished in those walls. i don’t like hamsters.

PS - how did a black bear and a hamster mate anyway? Answer? Carefully, I guess.

  7. Also, drew, buddy. Rescuing a hamster doesn’t make Joe a humanitarian… he’s a hamstertarian.

  8. If you put it in the closet during the day and then shine a light on it all night — you can change its activity pattern — just a tip. Hamsters are fine creatures, everyone should own one. Get it a friend…

Interesting tip - though I kind of like his sleeping pattern since I’m not home during the day.

I thought that hamsters were solitary creatures (at least when they get older)… Is that not the case?
